Two Schools, One Vision for Sustainability
Pathfinder MAT set out to reduce carbon emissions and energy costs across its estate. Working with C3 Group and Gate and Bar, the Trust applied for Salix PSDS funding to support the transition away from fossil fuel heating.
C3 Group developed two separate Heat Decarbonisation Plans (HDPs), both of which were successfully funded in 2025. The projects are now progressing through RIBA Stage 3, with full design and delivery planning underway.
What We Did: Malton Secondary School
Delivering Carbon Savings at Scale
C3 Group designed a comprehensive low-carbon system for Malton Secondary’s East Wing, supported by solar PV and building fabric upgrades.
Scope of Work:
- 400 kW Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) to replace fossil fuel heating
- Recommended upgrades: roof replacement, external wall insulation, and double-glazed windows
- 36 kWp solar PV system, generating 22.36 MWh annually
- Full cost and carbon model, technical drawings, and planning inputs
Key Outcomes:
- Annual energy savings: 319,732 kWh
- Annual cost savings: £28,435.48
- Capital cost: £1,266,463.93
- NPV: £401,158.77 | Levelised Cost of Energy: £0.23/kWh
- Payback period: 44.54 years
What We Did: Rufforth Primary School
Small School, Big Carbon Impact
C3 Group delivered a decarbonisation plan suited to Rufforth Primary’s scale and needs, replacing oil heating with an efficient ASHP system.
Scope of Work:
- 122.1 kW ASHP system to replace oil-based heating
- Recommended cavity wall insulation and UPVC double glazing
- Fully costed design aligned with Salix funding criteria
Key Outcomes:
- Annual energy savings: 118,556 kWh
- Annual cost savings: £3,278.80
- Capital cost: £298,065.96
- Client contribution: £45,065 (15%)
- Payback period: 90.91 years
The Results
Funding Secured, Projects in Motion
Both Salix bids were successfully awarded in 2025, allowing Pathfinder MAT to move forward with a major step in their decarbonisation journey. C3 Group is now leading both projects through full design and implementation planning.
